Since 2002, we have been at the heart of the growing English Wine industry – winning National and International awards to become one of England’s most respected wine producers. Our flagship sparkling Balfour Brut Rosé was the first English Sparkling wine to be served in BA First Class and the official English wine of the London 2012 Olympic games.
Across the verdant flats from Barnsole stand the mighty walls of the Roman fort of Richborough. It is here, in the garden of England, that the first Pinot Noir vines arrived with the Legions in 44A.D..Barnsole perpetuates this viticultural tradition of two millennia by growing Pinot Noir, along with other grape varieties, to make quintessential English wines.
The Barnes family started to consider diversifying the farm in the late 1960s as apple prices began to decline.. In 1969, one third of an acre of vines was planted and Biddenden Vineyards was born. Today the estate vineyard spans 23 acres of gentle south facing slopes where 12 different grape varieties are grown.
We own some of the finest vineyards in England, primarily situated on the North Downs of Kent with a terroir very similar to that of Champagne. Our Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Bacchus vines are grown on south facing chalk soils and benefit from a warm, maritime climate. We also source high quality fruit from long-term partner vineyards across Kent, Sussex and Essex, resulting in balanced wines with unique flavour profiles.
We planted Gusbourne’s first vineyards in 2004 and made our debut vintage wines just a few years later. These early wines were the start of something special – a journey into our unique Kent and Sussex terroir, and discovering the incredible grapes we can grow here.
Prior to planting ,the land had been assessed as exceptional for vine growing. The geological strata of chalk, limestone and clay (peppered with flint) is identical to the champagne region. Climactic conditions now make East Kent, and the Canterbury area in particular, an optimum location for growing the champagne varieties. The vineyard is on a gentle south facing slope at the perfect height above sea level. We have planted the classic champagne varieties Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier for sparkling wine but including clones which produce outstanding still wines.
Planted in 2007 by Herbert Hall’s great-grandson, Nicholas Hall, on a South-facing 4-degree gravel-seamed clay slope outside the village of Marden in Kent. This warm organic site has consistently produced the earliest and finest fruit on the estate since it was first farmed by Herbert Hall in the 19th Century.
Meophams Valley Vineyard was originally established in 1991 by David and Pauline Grey who planted several grape varieties, conducting vineyard tours and creating a range of award winning still and sparking wines. In November 2015 Ben, Surjit and Surrinder Bassi became the proud owners of the Meopham Valley Vineyard who have spent the last 18 years working closely with David at the vineyard.
Our vineyards, overlooking Wateringbury, are perfectly positioned on the Greensand Ridge. We also have a weekly rotation of food partners at the winery every Friday, Saturday and Sunday, with winery tours available every Saturday and some Sundays, and live music sessions on Fridays and Sundays.
Myatts Rhubarb Fizz is a Rhubarb Sparkling Wine, made using only surplus Rhubarb that would otherwise go to waste because it is outside of supermarket specification, e.g. wonky or too small. We laid down roots for Simpsons' Wine Estate in 2014 amid the pristine beauty of the Elham Valley where the soil could scarcely be improved upon for viticulture. Our vineyards are protected from the whimsy of the English climate by ancient woodland and anchored in the iconic chalky soils that are so highly revered in the world of both still and sparkling wine.
The “long, thirsty wait” that my father spoke of when the first vines were planted, has been well worth it as we are already enjoying great recognition for the quality of our vintage wines. In 2020 the estate won gold in the World Championships, the fifth medal across five separate Squerryes vintages.
We felt still wines were often an afterthought, not a priority when making decisions around British viticulture. . As still wine producers, the driving force behind all our decisions is quality over quantity and really allowing the sugars and characteristic flavours of the grape to develop to their fullest potential to ensure the best possible still wines.
Westwell is located just beneath the Pilgrims Way on the North Downs in Kent; a route used for centuries by Pilgrims travelling to Canterbury. We grow four different varieties - Pinot Meunier, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Ortega.
Our philosophy is simple: plant well, respect the soil and make great, honest wines from brilliant fruit.
Graham and Donna Barbour found the perfect site for a vineyard in 2009 and planted 10,000 vines in 2010. The vineyard is 20m above sea level and has the perfect aspect for growing vines. Their first vintage was released in 2015 and they now produce a range of award-winning still and sparkling wines.
